How 250 Million Dollars Works

When I first read the headline that Discovery Buys HowStuffWorks.com for $250 Million from the Wall Street Journal all I could think of was, "Their videos aren't THAT good." then I found out it wasn't their videos Discovery was after. It was their almost 4 million unique US visitors that they get each month and the 11 Million world wide users.

They should do a How to Get High in Google rankings then get bought by a big US Media Company video.

Moral of the post: Keep your production values low, your site visitors high and you can make a lot of money.

Good point... I guess the moral of the story is that micro-content aggregation sites still are the name of the game. Any unique or interesting content is pale in comparison to the directories/wiki's/dictonary sites on all things interesting on the internet.

the names have changed.. but it's the same type of site selling over and over again. Genuinely interesting content sites are nothing without their distribution/aggregation reference sites.

one thing you dont mention though, is that they fill a need. I've even shown their video in one of my videoblog classes as a way of teaching web constructs.

But the four million uniques dont hurt either:)
